Creating a Silk Necklace
08/2006

Contents: Silk Strings, Rubber Bands, Clasp (2 pieces)
Required Tools: Scissors, Tweezers, Super Glue, or Contact Cement

Instructions
1. Gather all the ends from one side of the silk strings together making sure they are even. Once gathered, as close to the ends as possible, wrap a rubber band layer on layer around the strings 6-8 times.
2. Cut the ends of the strings as close to the rubber band as possible.
3. Measure for length around your neck and cut the loose ends to the desired length.
4. Make sure that all of the strings are even in length and with the loose ends, repeat steps #1 and #2.
5. Check to make sure that each end wrapped in the rubber band fits inside each half of the clasp. If the strings stick out at all, cut them shorter.
6. Put glue inside one of the clasp pieces and insert the silk ends and press into place using the tweezers. Repeat for the other end.
7. Let the glue set for approximately 5 minutes.
8. Cut out any loose threads along the silk strings.
Now you are able to wear the necklace
9. Slide a pendant (like our Murano Glass Pendent) onto one end of the necklace and twist the strings from both ends. Close the clasp.

Painting a scarf in the "Salt Technique"
05/2004

One of Ute’s favorite techniques to share with beginning silk painters is the Salt Technique.
Painting on a plastic covered table. This can be used with or without salt.

Items needed: 1 plain silk scarf, 1 iron, 1 paint brush (no. 10), 1 mixing palette & bottled paint, (iron-fix), Effect Salt and FUN !!!

1) Remove Label and dampen scarf lightly with water.
2) Lay it flat or you may crinkle, or pinch to make folds,
3) Bring the paint to a mixing palette. Dilute the paint with a small amount of water, load the brush with paint to half way up the tip, wipe tip before going to the scarf. I recommend up to three harmonious colors on one scarf.
4) Begin to apply paint to the scarf at the furthest point away from your body, then work your way across the scarf. Keep painting until your brush is dry.
5) Only apply paint in the white areas, do NOT go back over areas you have already painted. Work quickly to ensure the scarf is still moist when you begin to apply salt.
6) Apply the salt when you have about 6 inches of painted area, being careful not to get any salt on the un-painted area.
7) Sprinkle the salt wherever you would like to see some lighted spots, you can choose to apply the salt to only certain areas , or to all of the scarf.
8) When the paint is dry, and the salt has been removed, iron the scarf at cotton setting for 2-3 minutes to fix the paint. The salt may make the scarf feel stiff at first, after you iron it, and wash it after two days, it will be soft and supple.
9) Be Creative!
